Meet

Aitor Throup

Join us as we visit one of today’s leading menswear designers, Aitor Throup, at his London studio. Moving from Spain to the UK at the age of 12, Aitor Throup was all but consumed by a passion for football. Surrounded by a new breed of fan in Burnley, Lancashire, Aitor soon developed a passion for labels like Stone Island and C.P. Company, both of whom he would later work for.

Fast forward a few decades and Aitor’s interest in these products combined with his own passion for drawing earned him a BA in Fashion Design at Manchester Metropolitan University and an MA in Fashion Menswear from the Royal College of Art in London. Although he may still be relatively unknown to the world at large, Aitor is far and away one of the most promising young menswear designers to emerge in the past few years, having designed England’s football kit under Umbro in 2009 for the home team and in 2010 for the away games. Featured in these works was the same design philosophy that would bring Aitor to the attention of fashion’s most forward-thinking creatives by 2014.

Now, with his debut collection officially on (select) store shelves, Aitor’s intricately detailed product development concept has proven the hype built around him over the years to be anything but hot air. As his studio shows, Aitor’s fascination with the human anatomy is continuously at the forefront of his creations, with garments manufactured by combining the pragmatism of product design with the endless creativity offered through art. Sketches, sculptures and books line his shelves, providing a reference for what seems to be a way of creation developed out of thin air.

Aitor’s interest in music is no secret either, having recently directed the music video for Damon Albarn’s “Everyday Robots” and working with Kasabian on their latest album48:13 alongside the music video for “Eez-eh.” With music always acting as an inspiration, he naturally furnishes his creative space with BeoPlay A8. Meshing perfectly with the surrounding objects, many of his own creation, the all-in-one music system complements both leaders’ impeccable design philosophy.

With a niche carved out in the world of fashion at the ripe age of 34, Aitor has no plans of slowing down and already has his sights set on other creative outlets like film. We’ll have to wait and see what he delivers, but for now enjoy a peek into Aitor’s London studio. This editorial was brought to you in collaboration with our friends from HIGHSNOBIETY.
