Francesco Giai Via is a festival programmer and film critic based in Torino, Italy. He’s spent years collaborating with Italy’s National Museum of Cinema and from 2006–2014 he was documentary programmer for the Torino Film Festival. From 2012 he’s been Head of Programming for CinemAmbiente, one of the most important environmental film festival in the world. He's also co-founder of Crocevia di Sguardi, a documentary film festival focused on migrant issues, now at its 13th edition. Alongside a depp and long-running passion for film and music, Francesco is also a teacher and lecturer, writing a column about comic books and graphic novels for the prestigious Italian website Doppiozero.

Francesco describes the idea linking the tracks in his mix: “Hybrid”. This term, usually more connected to breeds and vegetal species, has lately become a big thing in cinema. It describes practices that push documentary films more towards reality, by using the strong narrative driving force usually found in fictional films. At the moment there’s also some really great music that gets praised for being “cinematic”, so I wanted to pick up some tracks that could be filed under this cinematic label, but with a potential hybrid touch – we're gonna mix reality and fiction. “Reality” can be samples, field recordings, or the existing music itself. Fiction is putting all these elements into motion, through a narrative that can be considered close to the dramatic structure of the musical composition. The ultimate power of forms in movement. So this is a cinematic playlist that brings the real into the realm of musical emotions – a journey into a night that will lead you to the first rays of the morning light.
