Ask London’s fashion industry about their favourite DJs – there’s a good chance they will mention Yasmina Dexter, better known as Pandora’s Jukebox. We had the chance to meet the DJ and art director a few hours before she was playing at designer Nicholas Kirkwood’s anniversary party in Central London.
Q:
What’s so great about creating soundtracks for fashions shows?
Yasmina Dexter: The collaboration process involved when working with designers, bringing a new sensory angle to their collection, brand and image is always intriguing; exploring how I can add an extra perspective and feeling to the show.
Q:
WHICH SHOWS HAVE YOU BEEN MOST THRILLED TO CREATE MUSIC FOR?
Yasmina Dexter: I have been collaborating with Preen by Thornton Bregazzi on their runway soundtracks since 2000 and I love working with them, the same goes for the photographer and film maker Ben Toms.
Connecting with them on a personal level is important, I really like them as people, we understand each other in emotion, therefore the collaboration is lasting. This is really important to me.
Q:
Any labels or designers you dream to work with?
Yasmina Dexter: Somehow I have managed to work with many influencial creatives in some form, from soundtrack to events and films, all of whom I really respect, including Rick Owens, Miu Miu, Hood By Air, Alexander McQueen, Theo Adams for Louis Vuitton, Lotta Volkova, Preen by Thornton Breggazi and Ben Toms. Let’s see what the future brings for my next collaborations.
Q:
WHY DOES IT SEEM SO NATURAL TO YOU TO COMBINE MUSIC AND FASHION?
Yasmina Dexter: For me, the answer is quite simple: When you add music to vision, everything becomes better. Design appeals to the senses and by adding another level through music you have the opportunity to take this even further.
Q:
WHICH CLUBS IN LONDON ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ONES?
Yasmina Dexter: Club Milagro is a clubnight I run with two friends, we are determined to keep it fresh with no genre and total freedom in choice of music. It is all about the sound and having an intimate trip (and no photography). Corsica Studios is a great venue for their soundsystem and choice of DJs and musicians.
Q:
WHICH RESTAURANTS SHOULD WE GO TO IN EAST LONDON & WHY?
Yasmina Dexter: I like ‘A Little Of What You Fancy’ on Kingsland Road. And ‘Ivy’s Mess Hall’ does great food as well.
