Fashion's most sartorial "free agent", Mr Nick Wooster, shares views from his New York City apartment and tells us about his furnishing philosophy.

After having worked as a menswear buyer and fashion director for various industry heavyweights like Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys New York, Thom Browne and Gilt Groupe, Nick Wooster now calls himself a “free agent,” and reigns as one of the most influential fashion consultants and trendsetters in the world.

Nick Wooster believes in Feng Shui, the Chinese philosophical system on how to harmonize one’s self with the universe. It affects the way he furnishes his New York City

apartment on Christopher Street, which stands right on the edge of the thriving West Village.

Incidentally, his bedroom, which faces south and west, is laid out so that the back of his Auping Cleopatra bed, designed in the 50’s, doesn’t face the door.

His daily routine is as follows: he wakes up; brews his own iced coffee; eats a muffin (bottom first); then he decides what to wear. After a day out about town consulting the fashion industry as a

“Free Agent” (his own words), he comes back to this Christopher Street abode and the first thing he does is retreat to his Stephen Kenn couch.

Like the many other things taking up Wooster’s living room, the couch is a true testament to heritage and style, handmade out of repurposed WWII military fabric. It’s untreated to reveal all its glorious veteran history, and it matches the framed black and white vintage portraits that Wooster collects from antique shops.

““I could have lived in a bigger, newer apartment out in Chelsea or somewhere else but it’s just not the same,” he says. If you think it’s all because of the trendy, New Yorker neighborhood, that’s not the only reason: “Every subway line you want is right here.””
