The solid aluminium speaker grill that wraps smoothly around the Beolit 12 has quite the reputation here at B&O PLAY.
The unique pattern of holes on the grill that allows the speaker fabric beneath to peek through turned into a daunting challenge to our product development team.
The pattern of the grid is a visual reflection of the sound: It actually shows you where the sound comes out.
But – if you look real close you’ll notice the different sized holes. On the front you have the regular holes.
But then, as we move towards the side of the grill you might notice the half holes starting to appear.
Half holes? Yup, we know it sounds weird but that’s what they are: Half holes. And if you knew the amount of time it took us to make those you’d think we were out of our minds. It took us more than 6 months and 3 different suppliers to get the technique right. But we did nail it in the end – no pun intended.
The easy solution would have been to etch the half holes – but do you know what happens when you do that? If you etch, the bottom of the holes will turn circular – and that was an absolute no-go in terms of looks!
